Bottrop, located in the centre of the Ruhr Area and 13 kms south west of Gelsenkirchen, boasts a little under 120,000 inhabitants. The A2 motorway and A31 connect Bottrop to Gelsenkirchen and the rest of the Ruhr Area. Airports close by are, Dusseldorf and Dortmund, and Dusseldorf-Weeze, that latter being a little further away..
Bottrop was once a well known coal mining town. Today, about 4,000 people are still employed in mining in the Prosper-Haniel , which produces around 3.9 million tonnes of coal each year. Unfortunately this mine also survives on subsidies and will probably have to close very soon. But there are still many middle sized companies in the area offering services and products of all kinds.
